Heat Embossing and Die Cutting Question

Second day into the year and one birthday down. :-)  It was a good day and my husband enjoyed the indoor helicopter I bought him, the dog I don't think loved it so much.

I have a question to share from one of the ladies over in my Craftmad group.  Its concerning Heat Embossing which I just don't do but I am sure someone out there does and could help with an answer.
Thanks in advance.

"I know one of you will have an answer for, if I can only explain my problem.ive been trying to heat emboss images then die cut them, I get a beautiful crisp embossed image but when I put it through the big shot to die cut it I muck up the Image. I know I could be not lazy and do it by hand, but they make these sets for a reason lol. Card stock doesn't seem to mess up as bad as vellum, I totally lose the image on vellum. Looking forward to hearing from some clever people with answers"

I am thinking that the embossing on the image is flattened when it goes through the machine.

Thanks everyone for your help.  It has been interesting reading what you use and how you emboss and die cut.

  1. I would cut the shape first then stamp and heat emboss. I don't have big shot or cuttlebug but that seems like a simple solution. Happy New Year.

    1. Thanks Gail....I am thinking that is the way that Tracey will have to go. Wishing you a Happy New Year. I hope to visit a little more often this year. I have just downsized my blog feed to 58 blogs instead of 120 so less daunting. :-)

  3. I agree with the solution above. However I have a Tim Holtz set I did this with and it was fine - but that was with a Grand Caliber.

  4. Merry I find tat it depends on the die and the embossing powder...somtimes I have been super lucky and got beautiful embossing as you can see in the embossed butterflies which were first stamped, embossed and then die cut. I used the wow embossing powder and a sizzix die : Embossed butterflies

  6. Morning Merry, just popping in to thank you for your recent visits and wish you and yours a Happy New Year.

I've not been blogging much the last month, but hoping to get back into the swing of it and be a more regular visitor.

Re your question, I too would go with die cutting the cardstock first, I heat emboss a lot and sometimes yo get away with it but it's not predictable. Dry embossing over a heat embossed images does however seem to give good results - I use an e.bosser for most things and BS Express for Timmy/Sixxiz dies.

  7. Merry, I watch GinaK/Stamp TV videos. She stamps mostly with clear stamps and then heat embosses on previously die cut pieces that she sells. Your friend can hold the diecuts under the heat embosser gun with a pair of tweezers, so it doesn't burn her. Hope that helps.
